Making posters becomes a bit of a chicken and egg proposition after a while. Our economics teacher saw some of my “read around” science posters and wondered if it was possible that a set could be made for her economics students – both to engage them currently, and also as preparation for those who would go on to study economics and wanted a head start on “the literature”, and I guess also for university interview preparation purposes.
Making posters is not just a task of finding what we have in our library and presenting it, but rather researching around a topic to find out what is in the taught curriculum, and in the case of the Economics posters, working out what assumptions universities may have about what students could be thought to be familiar with, books that are trending in the popular business / economics press etc. (I knew my business degree would come in use some time!). Luckily there are lots and lots of lists for this discipline. We’ve been in the process of rejuvenating our nonfiction collection for a while, and this was an ideal opportunity for updating the economics section and getting some new books! I also like sliding in some of my favourite authors like Simon Winchester and William Dalrymple that provoke thinking around a global viewpoint.
