Africa Is Not A Country: Breaking Stereotypes of Modern Africa, by Dipo Faloyin

This book is one of my favorite reads of 2023. Whilst not specifically about degrowth, Faloyin takes us through the history of modern Africa and how it came to be divided into the countries it is known by today. Degrowth can’t happen without decolonization, and – because we are already exceeding the biophysical capacity of the planet – decolonization can’t happen without degrowth. This is a very accessible book about the ongoing harm of colonization. Africa Is Not A Country is really well-written, with elements of wit, dry humor, beautifully told family stories and a compelling narrative that will leave a lasting impression on you.

An exhilarating journey through the myths, misconceptions and stereotypes of modern Africa. This book is the history lesson that we all need, to understand the damage that has been done by legacies of white supremacy affecting African nations and the whole world.”
