Welcome to #ZimbabweLitMonth

Good afternoon all! My name is Sukoluhle Nyathi, affectionately known as Sue Nyathi. I am delighted to assume my role as guest curator for November as we steer the vast world of Zimbabwe Literature. I am a published Zimbabwean author of four fiction titles: The Polygamist (2012), The Gold Diggers (2018), A Family Affair (2020), and An Angel’s Demise (2022). I have edited a nonfiction anthology titled When Secrets Become Stories, Women Speak Out (2021).I look forward to the month ahead as we share our daily bread on Zimbabwe Literature.

So this month I will steer you through the world of Zimbabwean literature. I don’t know if we will be able to get through the entire body of work but I will try and introduce you to as much fiction as possible focusing largely on the period 2021 to date. I will begin the journey with contemporary literature as I believe the world is familiar with our classics: Without a Name (1994) by Yvonne Vera, Harvest of Thorns (1989) by Shimmer Chinodya, Nervous Conditions (1988) by Tsitsi Dangarembga, House of Hunger (1978) by Dambudzo Marachera, Umendo, Marriage is a Gamble by Barbara Makhalisa (1977) just to mention a few.

Nyathi describes herself as an analyst by profession and a writer by passion because she is not trained as a writer. She has a Master’s Degree in Finance and Investments and had a career spanning over 20 years in the investment industry. Destiny retired her from this path in 2018 so she could pursue writing full time. Nyathi is an award-winning author with 4 fiction bestselling novels: The Polygamist (2012), The Gold Diggers (2018) A Family Affair (2020) and An Angel’s Demise (2022). Nyathi edited a nonfiction anthology of essays with a gender-based violence theme titled: When Secrets Become Stories, Women Speak Out (2021) Nyathi has also contributed to 3 other Anthologies’: Black Tax (2019), Hair: Weaving and Unpicking Stories of Identity (2019) Karavan Press and Die meisie met uitroeptekens in haar oë  by Jaco Jacobs (2021) Nyathi also has experience in script writing for television and a feature film.
