Phoneme Media is a nonprofit media company dedicated to promoting cross-cultural understanding, connecting people and ideas through translated books and films.
Phoneme Media‘s past and forthcoming books include translations from Arabic, Esperanto, Farsi, French, Hebrew, Isthmus Zapotec, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Mazatec, Mongolian, Nahuatl, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Serbian, Spanish, Tsotsil, Yucatec Maya, and Zoque. Phoneme Media‘s short films—which include book trailers, video poems, paratextual films, and traditional short-subject documentaries—have been shot in Argentina, Bangladesh, Burundi, Cuba, Equatorial Guinea, and Mexico. We’re just getting started.
Our books have been awarded National Endowment for the Arts Translation Grants, Pen/Heim Translation Fund Fellowships, and the Best Translated Book Award for Poetry (in both 2015 and 2016). They’ve been long- and short-listed for the PEN Prize for Poetry in Translation, long-listed for the National Translation Award, and long-listed for the Best Translated Book Award for Poetry.
